Co-led by Shweta Singh (SEE), the Future Manufacturing exploratory group brings together Purdue researchers to develop sustainable, scalable solutions that advance manufacturing and workforce growth across Indiana, the Midwest, and beyond.

Process systems engineering
Focusing on designing, optimizing, and integrating complex industrial processes using modeling, automation, and data analytics to enhance efficiency, sustainability, and adaptability across production systems.
Systems scale sustainability modeling
Simulating and analyzing environmental, economic, and social impacts across entire production networks to optimize resource use, reduce emissions, and support long-term sustainable decision-making.
Safety hazards in manufacturing operations
Identifying potential sources of harm such as mechanical failures, chemical exposures, ergonomic risks, or human errors that can cause injuries, illnesses, or disruptions, requiring proactive identification, control measures, and safety protocols to protect workers and systems.
Disaster resilience for manufacturing
Increasing the ability of production systems to anticipate, withstand, adapt to, and recover from disruptions such as natural disasters or cyberattacks through robust design, contingency planning, and flexible operations that ensure continuity and sustainability.
AI in manufacturing
Utilizing AI advancements to enhance productivity, quality, and flexibility by enabling intelligent automation, predictive maintenance, real-time analytics, and adaptive control systems that optimize operations, reduce waste, and support data-driven decision-making across the production lifecycle.
Sensors and data science
Enabling real-time monitoring, analysis, and optimization of processes by collecting and interpreting data from connected devices, driving smarter decisions, predictive maintenance, and enhanced efficiency across production systems.
Supply chains
Interconnected networks that manage the flow of materials, information, and products from source to consumer, optimized through digital technologies, sustainability practices, and resilience strategies to enhance efficiency, transparency, and adaptability.
