Research

We bring together faculty and staff from across disciplines to explore sustainability challenges, spark collaboration, and advance innovative, solution-oriented research that spans the Purdue campus and beyond.

Key areas of research impact

Our research spans a wide range of sustainability challenges, technologies, and solutions — highlighting where Purdue science has the greatest potential to improve lives and ecosystems.

Research in action

ISF organizes interdisciplinary research through faculty-led groups and initiatives that keep Purdue at the forefront of emerging research.

Research Communities

These communities represent groups of affiliates with a common research interest and commitment. They typically include researchers from across multiple colleges and departments who look at various aspects of larger topic areas.

Strategic Research Teams

These teams are interdisciplinary organizational units composed of well-established field experts and trainees operating with targeted strategic goals of furthering research portfolios and raising the research profile in a specific area. The team members typically have deep, historic, and ongoing research collaborations.

Special Initiatives

ISF leads special research initiatives that address key opportunities or needs requiring focused, long-term support from faculty and staff.

Exploratory Groups

These groups provide a vehicle through which researchers can collaborate to explore whether it makes sense to grow a new research community or special initiative within the institute. These groups are generally given institute support for one year.

Centers and Networks

Centers and Networks emerge from ISF’s leadership in a research area which has then experienced growth, requiring additional support for development of partnerships and collaborations across campus and beyond.
