Amazon Sustainability (ASEG)
Led by Andrea Liceaga (FSCI), the Amazon Sustainability Exploratory Group (ASEG) is an interdisciplinary ISF initiative focused on advancing sustainable, equitable, and community-centered approaches to stewardship of the Amazon region. ASEG connects Purdue faculty and researchers with international partners to explore research, engagement, and learning opportunities that address the complex relationships between people, ecosystems, and natural resources in the Amazon.

Andrea Liceaga named 2026 University Faculty Scholar
Her internationally recognized work with nonconventional proteins and bioactive peptides — naturally occurring compounds released during digestion or fermentation — is advancing new solutions to prevent and manage chronic diseases, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension and inflammation.

Studying the interconnected relationships between Indigenous communities, local livelihoods, and natural systems, with an emphasis on culturally grounded approaches to sustainability that respect traditions, knowledge systems, and governance structures.
Sustainable resource use and bioprocessing
Identifying natural resources and side-streams grown or cultivated in the Amazon region with potential for sustainable bioprocessing and biobusiness applications that create economic alternatives while protecting ecosystems.
Community-centered development pathways
Exploring development models that strengthen economic opportunities, access to basic services, and long-term well-being for Amazon communities, supporting locally driven solutions to environmental and social challenges.
International collaboration and capacity building
Building international partnerships with local institutions and Amazon communities to support collaborative research, shared learning, and sustainable approaches to managing and evaluating local resources.
